It might sound strange, as a recruitment consultancy, that we’re offering advice on getting a job on TotalJobs but a good CV helps everyone. Keeping your CV up-to-date and using job platforms better, not only helps you find a job directly but it also helps recruitment consultancies find you a job too.
Where to start on TotalJobs?
If you’ve logged in and created an account on TotalJobs, our first recommendation is to go to your profile and see if your profile is open to offers or hidden.
If you’re actively looking for a job then make sure you are open to offers. This allows recruitment consultancies, like ourselves, to search for you and make contact about potential roles. And, if you’re not looking, our advice is to hide profile. That stops unwanted contact but still allows you to keep an eye on what’s out there if needed.
What job are you looking for?
Your TotalJobs profile then gives you the opportunity to fill in three sections:
All of these have areas that a recruiter or hiring manager can use to find your profile if you are open to offers.
TotalJobs allows you to show the different roles you can add to your search. Depending on what you type in, it will auto-suggest options too. These are based on the site’s algorithm and will be jobs that have appeared or are searched for on the site. If you’re job title is quite niche, it might be worth making this broader to give yourself the best chance of being found.
Our advice is to consider what you want from a role and its benefits before completing this section. Where do you want to work ideally? And how much do you want to earn? What working model works best for you? And where? Knowing what you want from a role will help you complete this section and filter out roles that might not be quite right.
What do you bring to a role?
This section enables you to transfer details from LinkedIn or upload a document. But there is also a section that allows you to specify your skills:
We’ve written about what hard and soft skills employers value and this section is invaluable to your job hunt. Adding hard and soft skills here ties directly into what recruiters can see and how they search for potential applicants. Our recommendation is to give serious thought to this section. Don’t go overboard but do use the prompts provided to select applicable skills.
What else can help you get a job on TotalJobs?
While we’re focusing on using TotalJobs effectively in this article, we do recommend that you upload a tailored CV and cover letter for each role. You might have added a generic CV to your profile but TotalJobs allows you to add a different one for each role that you apply for. Taking the time to do this can definitely pay dividends in your job search.
We’d also recommend that you set up job alerts through the notification settings:
These allow you to set an alert based on a job title and location. But you can also set how often the job alerts come through as well and how. If you’re looking for a role that you know will have a lot of applicants, this can help you find the role more quickly. It can then give you time to tailor your CV and put an application in for the best chance of success.
